Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Relative Calls on Eric Metaxas to Retract His Claims
Grandnephew says Metaxas showed "his true character"
It didn’t take long.
Yesterday, several hours after I posted the video clip of Eric Metaxas reversing his apology to Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s relatives, Tobias Korenke, Bonhoeffer’s grand-nephew, contacted me with the following statement:
Eric Metaxas once again shows his true character: He lies shamelessly when he wants to prove his ludicrous theses. The fact that such a liar sees himself as the upholder of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's legacy is tasteless and infinitely cynical. He obviously didn't understand anything about Bonhoeffer.
To repeat: no one in our family has ever spoken out pro-Hamas. I call on Mr. Metaxas one last time to retract his assertions immediately.
Although Korenke has acted as a spokesperson for the Bonhoeffer family before, he spoke for himself on this occasion. He is a grandchild of Ursula Bonhoeffer Schleicher, Dietrich's eldest sister, and her husband Rüdiger Schleicher. Rüdiger was also a resistance fighter and was murdered by the Nazis. There was much sacrifice throughout the Bonhoeffer family.
In October 2024, Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s relatives spoke out against Metaxas’ portrayal of their ancestor. In November on the Glenn Beck Show, Eric Metaxas struck back at Bonhoeffer’s family calling them Jew-haters and pro-Hamas lunatics. The next day, I reported that Bonhoeffer’s relatives were considering legal action against Metaxas for defamation. After doubling down on his name-calling, Metaxas reversed himself and issued an apology on December 4. Yesterday, I reported that just days after his apology, Metaxas continued to refer to Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s family as “pro-Hamas” and agreed with the implication that their criticism of him placed them on a pro-Hitler “vector.”
I know I have to Love My Neighbor No Exceptions, but some people really do make that difficult.
