I don’t need to write a lot to get this done, but you have to be prepared to do a little work.
First, read this Washington Post article which describes what Claudine Gay is accused of doing.
Then read this Twitter thread by Aaron New about plagiarism, principally in the writing of Liberty University’s Tim Clinton.
While you’re at it, read this post about academic misconduct on the part of David Barton. He once claimed to have an earned doctorate that he doesn’t have. Some other guy who did a similar thing lost his job.
Now when Christopher Rufo talks about standards and reclaiming this and that, I don’t really follow. It looks like to me that people who claim to be all full of academic standards don’t seem to go by them.
If Dr. Gay violated the Harvard plagiarism standards, she should face consequences. But so should white, male, Christians who do it as well. That group seems to emerge smelling like a rose.
The people who put the squeeze on Claudine Gay have their work cut out for them. I can tell them where to start if they want to clean up their own house first.
(careful readers will notice I changed the title from “was a white, evangelical male” to “were a white, evangelical male.” I remembered somewhere in the night that hypotheticals require were instead of was.)
Plagiarism is wrong and so is antisemitism. And there is plenty of room to go around regarding hypocrisy. You do not have to be a believer to be neck deep in it. And of course true believers are not the malignant narcissists pretending that they know Jesus Christ on social media. They will not know Him when He comes falling on them as the Rock and crushes them to dust.
doesn’t say a lot about the intelligence and discernment of the evangelical community..
